Authentic Roman Cuisine in vibrant San Francisco’s SoMa district since 2009

54 Mint is a modern Italian trattoria in San Francisco’s historic Mint Plaza. A place to gather, savor, and celebrate, we bring the warmth of Rome to the heart of the city.

Our Chef Mattia Marcelli, a native of Rome, crafts dishes rooted in Roman tradition while celebrating the seasons. From supplì al telefono, cacio e pepe, and oxtail vaccinara to seasonal antipasti, all pastas, bread, and desserts are homemade, crafted with care and authenticity.

Italian wines, made from native grapes of Italy, along with thoughtful cocktails featuring amaros and seasonal ingredients, complete the experience.

Housed in a historic building in the SoMa district, 54 Mint blends Italian heritage with contemporary San Francisco design, creating a space that is both elegant and welcoming.

OUR STORY

In 2009, three not-so-young friends opened 54 Mint in the heart of San Francisco, driven by a shared dream: to bring the true essence of authentic Italian cuisine to the city. Only months after 54 Mint opened its doors, one of the partners, Alberto Avalle (Il Buco in New York City), invited Gianluca Legrottaglie to join the team and take the lead of the operation, following his culinary journey from Il Buco to Aurora in Brooklyn.

Shortly after his arrival, Gianluca became the sole operator of 54 Mint, eventually taking full control as his partners retired. Taking the reins, he invited his longtime friend and colleague from New York, Chef Adam Weisell, to join the kitchen and help shape the restaurant’s culinary vision. Under Weisell’s leadership, the team earned accolades including recognition from the Michelin Guide’s “Gourmand” category, before he moved to Chicago in 2012. Weisell then passed the kitchen to Roman native Mattia Marcelli, who has led it ever since, upholding the tradition of excellence and passion that continues to define 54 Mint today.

From the very beginning, 54 Mint was founded on the mission of transporting guests to the heart of Italy through authentic Roman dishes and the warmth of genuine Italian hospitality.
